Minneapolis-Saint Paul is a major metropolitan area built around three rivers, commonly known as the « Twin Cities ». Constructed between 1896 and 1905, the Minnesota State Capitol building in St. Paul recently underwent renovations to restore the historic structure back to its original glamour. The imposing St. Paul Cathedral was built in the early 1900s and is today the National Shrine of the Apostle Paul and a pilgrimage site. Located in Bloomington is the Mall of America ; when it opened in 1992 it was one of the largest malls in the United States. Hosting more than 700.000 visitors a year, the Minneapolis Institute of Art has a wide range of art and attractions all with free admission to explore. The Duluth Aerial Lift Bridge is operated 24 hours of the day and watching it raise and lower for freight ships and tour boats is part of the spectacle. Waterfalls, rocky cliffs and great views of Lake Superior accompany the 240 km long North Shore Scenic Drive, starting near Duluth. The town of Ely, home to the International Wolf Center, is an excellent base from which to explore the unspoiled landscape of the Superior National Forest. Voyageurs National Park is a pristine wilderness area that combines natural beauty with history.
